Glasgow Tigers has a dedicated following. Volunteers who are prepared to put their time, effort and their money into supporting and maintaining this local club. But this is a club on the up. In December 2015 the club was purchased by Gerry and Michael Facenna, local Possil boys and owners of Allied Vehicles. They have since invested around £2m in transforming the facilities. Along with a renewed stand, improved pit area, catering and associated facilities - the luxury of decent toilets has not gone unnoticed by the fans.
Nor has it gone unnoticed by Sky Sports who were there again on Wednesday to transmit the meet across the world – and Gery was keen to tell us why they want to come to Ashfield, it is a great track that leads to exciting racing including plenty of opportunity to overtake.
But there are even bigger plans for the future. Gerry and Michael Facenna see Ashfield Stadium at the heart of the community, with a speedway training track: a football pitch and training facility; and a teaching facility to help local kids learn skills in mechanics, fabrication and body shop to name a few. What a fantastic opportunity. The plans are still in development and the Facennas are working with Glasgow City Council, NG Homes and other partners to make progress and to attract the funding necessary to make this happen. Our evening was further enlightened by some of the interesting people with great ideas that we met. Callum MacDonald, former digital editor with the Herald, told us of an exciting new website that he has recently set up which focuses on positive local news from across Scotland. A strictly apolitical, social enterprise that promotes good things that are happening across our communities – find out more here http://positivelyscottish.scot.
A great evening and an impressive group of community focused individuals who are looking to bring opportunity and positivity to Possilpark. A growing attraction, but still not as well known as it could be. Why not go along to the speedway at Ashfield Stadium and see for yourself? http://www.glasgowtigers.co/
