We are organising a run to raise funds for A Community In Motion. A Community in Motion involves the whole community working together to ensure young people and their parents have the skills to achieve a better quality life chances through the themes of Health, Happiness and Hope.
The School catchments cover a large area of Glasgow's East End where inequality and deprivation are big issues for the community. There is a long history of violence in these communities and many of the young people are vulnerable children who are at the moment on the cusp of gang involvement.
The project aims to support the development of softer skills to help children navigate an increasing complex world and to build empathy into the classroom setting. This will reduce the barriers to learning through helping the young people to deal with the situations they face on a daily basis.
This initiative will be built upon year on year as the children develop. It will be developed into a programme that will begin at Primary 5, be continued through secondary school and into adulthood.
It will particularly support parents and families who are 'just coping' to give them strategies to support their young people to engage in learning, school and the wider community.
Over the coming years these schools, the teachers, pupils and the parents will work with partners such as The Scottish Violence Reduction Unit through their Mentors in Violence Prevention programme, Re-Attachment, Medics against Violence, PEEK, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Glasgow and others to make a change.
The run will take place on Sunday 14th of June in Pollok Park, Glasgow. There are 3 planned routes: 10, 5 and 2k so something for all the family, and we are affiliated with Scottish Athletics.
