Gowkthrapple is a predominantly residential area situated between Netherton and Overtown. The area was re-developed in the early 2000s but remains in the 5% most deprived areas in Scotland, with high levels of unemployment.
In March this year the Gowthrapple Voluntary Action Group was established and set its own aims for the services it wanted to see provided in the area, including a communal internet and gaming area; a food co-operative; a furniture co-operative and a music group.
The people we met on the day showed real passion, dedication and community-spirit in their efforts to make their area a better, safer place to live. The results speak for themselves: crime and antisocial behaviour have fallen significantly, the police and the community are communicating better with each other and residents told us they now feel safe to leave their homes after dark when previously they hadn't.
